Vice Chair of the Criminal Law Certificate Committee
Jessica Travis was recently appointed to the Vice Chair position of the Criminal Law Certificate Committee for the Florida Bar’s Criminal Trial Law Board Certification program. Not only is she Board Certified herself, but as Vice Chair she assists in determining if other attorneys meet the high standards that are required to become Board Certified.
As Vice Chair Jessica will be involved in the Board Certification process, where she will assist in reviewing applications to ensure the applicants meet the qualifications and standards required to be eligible to sit for the certification exam. Jessica will also be involved in drafting the Criminal Trial Law certification exam questions as well as grading the exams.
A Board Certified attorney has been “Evaluated for Professionalism and Tested for Expertise” and only 7% of eligible Florida Bar members are Board Certified. To become Board Certified, an attorney must be
in good standing with the Florida Bar and meet their area of specialization’s standards. For Criminal Trial Law Certification, the standards include but are not limited to:
- Practice of law for at least 5 years
- Substantial involvement in the specialty of criminal trial law
- Peer review
- A passing grade of at least 70% on a written examination
Board Certification is a voluntary program for attorneys, and is the highest level of evaluation by the Florida Bar. The Florida Bar considers Board Certified attorneys to be experts or specialists in their area of certification. Jessica has been Board Certified in Criminal Trial Law since 2013.
